She severed the link in November. In September, Intel won a US$3.5 billion (A$5.6 billion) contract to manufacture computer chips for the US military. "The involvement of ANU's vice-chancellor with Intel thus raises significant questions around potential implications under Australia's tight laws on foreign interference and defence security," a letter signed by the leadership of the National Tertiary Education Union to Education Minister Jason Clare said. But the ANU chancellor has written to the university's governing council saying the links with the American corporation were well-known - and, indeed, an asset for the university. "We considered her ongoing association would continue to enhance her international profile and networks for the benefit of ANU," Ms Bishop wrote to her fellow ANU council members. "I was, and remain satisfied, that it was appropriate for the vice-chancellor to maintain her association with Intel, given the limited nature of the role, the due diligence I had undertaken on behalf of the council, and her ongoing commitment to abide by the disclosure requirements." But the Australian Financial Review reported last week that members of the ANU's "governing body say they have no recollection of an agreement for new vice-chancellor Genevieve Bell to continue working for global technology company Intel ever being mentioned". Ms Bishop said in her letter to the ANU council that the committee that appointed Professor Bell to the vice-chancellorship was aware of the Intel link. "Professor Bell's role at Intel was disclosed in detail to that committee, was prominent in her CV, her written application and the candidate report, and was discussed during her presentations to the committee." They are equals who work in tandem. Both have been embattled recently as the ANU tries to get its deficit of spending over income down, including through making staff redundant . Professor Bell took a 10 per cent cut to her salary of just over $1 million dollars as part of the measures to reduce ANU's ongoing costs by $250 million by early 2026. But a plea to staff to forego a pay-rise was rejected by the staff. Ms Bishop, a former federal Liberal minister, was criticised for the blunt way she portrayed the cuts as staff prepared to vote. Some at the university thought her response hardened staff attitudes. She was asked by The Canberra Times if it was fair of the university to ask staff to give up their pay rises when they believed they had not caused its financial problems. "It depends to whom you refer," Ms Bishop replied, "because many members of staff have been part of the inefficiencies that the university is now seeking to address." On Tuesday last week, a group of ANU alumni wrote to the Australian National Audit Office , stating it had "extensively consulted with ANU alumni and staff". "In view of the crisis engulfing the ANU, we request, that as a matter of urgency, the Australian National Audit Office undertake a financial audit and an audit of the governance of the ANU," the letter said. Dec 24 (Reuters) - Wall Street's main indexes all closed higher on Tuesday, with gains in megacap and growth stocks bolstering benchmarks in a truncated Christmas Eve session. Both the Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI), and Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC), scored four straight sessions of gains, with the S&P 500 (.SPX), taking its winning streak to three sessions, marking the first day of the seasonal Santa Claus rally. The Dow had skidded for 10 straight sessions earlier this month, its longest losing streak since 1974. With megacap stocks having outsized influence on markets, their performance is often a key driver of indexes. When coupled with reduced trading volumes and few other catalysts, as many investors take time off for the holidays, this is even more pronounced. All the so-called Magnificent Seven megacap technology stocks climbed on Tuesday, led by the 7.4% jump in Tesla (TSLA.O) shares. Invest wisely: Best online brokers The automaker's best one-day gain in six weeks helped push the consumer discretionary (.SPLRCD) index 2.6% higher. It was the top gaining sector in the S&P, with all 11 ending in positive territory. Elsewhere, chip manufacturers were also buoyant. The future of a social media ban has become less clear as opposition politicians defy their leader’s position and make their concerns known. A federal government proposal to ban children under 16 from accessing social media platforms like Snapchat, TikTok and Instagram is expected to be debated in Parliament on Tuesday. Though the world-leading proposal has received bipartisan support, and strong backing specifically from Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, there is some dissent within coalition ranks. “This is a test for Peter Dutton, about his leadership,” cabinet minister Amanda Rishworth told the Today Show. Nationals politicians have expressed worries over privacy issues relating to age verification with Senator Matt Canavan noting this would affect all social media users. “You’re going to have to verify everyone’s age and so there’s huge privacy and free speech implications,” he told ABC radio. The bill doesn’t require social media companies to destroy information, according to Senator Canavan, and the way users provide digital consent is often a rushed process, which breeds concerns about the way people hand over their information. There are also serious questions about whether the change will keep children off social media. “Despite the good intentions behind this bill, it may be completely ineffective or worse,” Senator Canavan said. “If we make clumsy hurdles for social media use, my eight-year-old will be able to get around them, but your 80-year-old grandma won’t.” Fellow Nationals senator Bridget McKenzie added that the use of digital ID was worrying to some, though the government had ruled out its use in age assurance. The coalition has said it would reserve its final decision on the bill until answers had been received from the government, though concerns have arisen over the legislation’s rushed consultation process. Communications Minister Michelle Rowland introduced the reform to parliament on Thursday, which she said would make the online environment better for young people. The consultation period for groups and individuals to make submissions closed a day later on Friday. A senate committee on Monday held a one-day hearing and is due to report back on Tuesday. In submissions to the inquiry, a number of groups, including social media companies, pointed to the short notice period. Snap Inc, which runs Snapchat, wrote the “the extremely compressed timeline” had allowed stakeholders little more than 24 hours to provide a response which “severely” constrained thorough analysis and informed debate. X, formerly Twitter, also criticised the “unreasonably short time-frame of one day”. Meta, which owns Facebook, wrote there had been “minimal consultation or engagement” and urged the government to wait for the results of the age assurance trial before progressing with the legislation. TikTok said despite the “time-limited review” there were a range of “serious, unresolved problems” that the government must clarify to ensure there wouldn’t be unintended consequences. Given the widespread support for the ban, Senator Canavan insists there is no need to rush analysis. Even so, as a creative enterprise, Britain’s leading terrestrial broadcaster looks hugely undervalued. Consider this. Almost every leading show on the small screen at present has origins in ITV Studios. The list includes the BBC series Ludwig starring David Mitchell, the Netflix hit Fool Me Once and Disney’s Rivals as well as the politically explosive Mr Bates Vs The Post Office. The biggest changes at ITV since Carolyn McCall took the helm in 2018 are the group’s income streams. Revenues from ITV Studios and streaming service ITV X climbed from 45 per cent to 60 per cent and are expected to hit 66 per cent by 2026. If one were to price ITV Studios on the same multiple as All3Media, sold to RedBird IMI in May of this year, it would be worth £3billion plus. That is more than the whole of the broadcaster, which is valued at £2.5billion following the latest 8.6 per cent rise to 71.15p in the group’s shares. ITV is a bellwether for the UK and has suffered in recent years from the same shocks as the rest of Britain – the great financial crisis, Covid-19 and the Ukraine war. Prospects in recent months have been damaged by the lengthy interregnum between Labour’s election and the Budget. Both have caused large scale business advertisers to curtail plans. There are few better ways of reaching a large scale audience than ITV. I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here has been drawing audiences of 9m. Perpetual favourites such as Coronation Street are gold dust for advertisers. So far, no observable change in ITV’s share register has been seen. The biggest holding of 10.45 per cent is held by John Malone’s spawling media empire Liberty Global. He and his shrewd lieutenants would not want to see ITV sold on the cheap. There must be the possibility that someone might want to see studios spun off as a means of releasing value. Private equity outfit CVC, mentioned as a bidder (there has been no approach), might want to get its hands on some of the sports rights. Buying ITV is not as straightforward as it might seem. The group’s licence, valid until 2034, contains obligations. These include generating output in the UK regions and devotion of airtime to news bulletins. Most importantly, however, the loss of ITV’s independence would be a blow to creative Britain. This, just at the moment when the Labour Government has remembered that it is a sector which excels and is ready for growth. Pink panthers The most shocking aspect of the Barclays agreement to pay a fine of £40million to the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), over the bank’s Qatar fundraising in 2008, is the time it has taken to dish out the discipline. Excuses can be made for the delays, including the parallel prosecution by the equally useless Serious Fraud Office (SFO), but white-collar justice which takes 16 years is a waste of space. Since then, the Barclays board has been replenished and the bank has had to ride out another crisis over the connection of former boss Jes Staley to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In balance sheet terms, the payout is a rounding error. Britain’s system of financial enforcement is woeful. An excoriating report by MPs and the Lords accuses the FCA of being ‘incompetent at best, and dishonest at worst’. Instead of delivering swift and firm white-collar justice, the SFO finds itself with multi-million pound legal costs over the bungled prosecution of Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation (ENRC). Such humiliations have made British financial justice a laughing stock. Carbon retreat Anglo American is demonstrating that self-help is preferable than selling to a big overseas rival which would have crushed culture and ambition. The sale of its remaining steel making coal mines in Australia to Peabody Energy, once part of the UK’s Hanson conglomerate, frees up £3.1billion for investment in copper and other enterprises. US bankruptcy judge Christopher Lopez had been scheduled to hear an emergency motion to disqualify The Onion’s bid, but decided to put it off until either December 9 or December 17. That is also when the judge will hear arguments on a request to approve the sale of Infowars to The Onion. Mr Lopez said similar arguments are being made in both requests. He could allow The Onion to move forward with the sale, order a new auction or name the other bidder as the winner. At stake is whether Mr Jones gets to stay at Infowars’ studio in Austin, Texas, under a new owner friendly to him, or whether he gets kicked out by The Onion. The other bidder, First United American Companies, runs a website in Mr Jones’s name that sells nutritional supplements. Regardless, Mr Jones has set up a new studio, websites and social media accounts that would allow him to keep airing his show. His personal account with 3.3 million followers on the social platform X was not part of the sale, although Mr Lopez will be deciding whether it should be included in the liquidation and sold off later. In a new court filing on Monday, lawyers for X objected to any sale of the accounts of both Mr Jones and Infowars, saying X is the owner of the accounts and that it has not given consent for them to be sold or transferred. Mr Jones has praised X owner Elon Musk on his show and suggested that Mr Musk should buy Infowars. Mr Musk has not responded publicly to that suggestion and was not among the bidders. Mr Jones’ bankruptcy and the liquidation of his assets came about after he was ordered to pay nearly 1.5 billion dollars (£1.19 billion) to relatives of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. Mr Jones was found liable for defamation and emotional distress damages in lawsuits in Connecticut and Texas for repeatedly calling the 2012 shooting that killed 20 first graders and six educators a hoax staged by actors to increase gun control.
