Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain, perennial contenders in both France and Europe, are also facing an uphill battle in Opta's forecast. Despite boasting a star-studded lineup featuring the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe, PSG are projected to finish a disappointing 24th in the group standings. The French giants have fallen short of Champions League glory in recent seasons, often struggling to find the right balance and cohesion in crucial moments. Manager Mauricio Pochettino will need to find a way to unlock his team's full potential and turn their fortunes around in a fiercely competitive group. On the positive side, the single-month export volume in November reached a new high for the year, indicating a strong demand for the country's products and services in the global market. By Lawrence Delevingne (Reuters) -A U.S. tech stock rally and expectations of lower interest rates boosted global shares while the euro and dollar were steady on Wednesday despite political turmoil in South Korea and France. Wall Street’s major stock indexes rallied to record closing highs, led higher by tech stocks and comments by Federal Reserve officials. Enterprise cloud company Salesforce and chipmaker Marvell Technology logged strong third-quarter results. UnitedHealth shares gained nearly 1% despite Brian Thompson, the CEO of its insurance unit, being fatally shot on Wednesday morning in New York City. The S&P 500 added 0.6% to 6,086 and the Nasdaq Composite jumped 1.3% to 19,735 — both record highs — while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.7%, to 45,014. MSCI’s gauge of stocks across the globe rose 0.47%. U.S. Treasury yields fell after Fed Chair Jerome Powell said the recent strength of the economy will allow the U.S. central bank to “be a little more cautious as we try to find neutral” with interest rate policy. The day started on a more negative note, when lawmakers in South Korea, Asia’s fourth-largest economy, called on President Yoon Suk Yeol to resign or face impeachment a day after he declared martial law, only to reverse the move hours later. The crisis left South Korea’s benchmark KOSPI index down 1.4%, taking its year-to-date losses to over 7% and making it the worst performing major stock market in Asia this year. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan, which counts Samsung Electronics as one of its top constituents, fell 0.15%. Most Asian markets aside from South Korea rose. The won currency, buoyed by suspected central bank intervention, steadied but remained close to the two-year low against the dollar that it hit late on Tuesday. South Korea’s finance ministry said it was prepared to deploy unlimited liquidity into financial markets. Reports said the financial regulator was ready to deploy 10 trillion won ($7.1 billion) in a stock market stabilisation fund. “Martial law itself has been lifted, but this incident creates more uncertainty in the political landscape and the economy,” said ING senior economist Min Joo Kang. In Europe, stocks gained about 0.4% and the euro traded near a two-year low ahead of the no-confidence vote in France. French lawmakers later in the day voted to oust the fragile coalition of Prime Minister Michel Barnier, deepening the political crisis in the euro zone’s second-largest economy. Barnier’s government is France’s first to be forced out by a no-confidence vote in more than 60 years. The country is struggling to tame a massive budget deficit. The single currency, last at $1.0511, was little changed on the day but down about 5% over the last three months. Investors have been bracing for tariffs from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. U.S. POLICY PATH Away from political turmoil, investors are hoping for more clues on the policy path the Fed will likely take next year, with a November employment report due on Friday. U.S. job openings increased solidly in October while layoffs dropped by the most in 1-1/2 years, data showed on Tuesday. Another survey showed employers hesitant to hire more workers. U.S. economic activity also expanded slightly in most regions since early October, with employment growth “subdued” and inflation rising at a modest pace and businesses expressing optimism about the future, the Fed said on Wednesday in its “Beige Book” economic summary. The yield on benchmark U.S. 10-year notes fell 3.3 basis points to 4.188%, from 4.221% late on Tuesday. St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem said the pace of future rate cuts has grown less clear. The BlackRock Investment Institute (BII) said it sees persistent U.S. inflationary pressures from rising geopolitical fragmentation, big spending on AI and low-carbon transition. In debt markets, BII raised its weighting on short-term U.S. Treasuries to “neutral” from “underweight”, saying market pricing now roughly matches its expectations for interest rate cuts from the Fed next year. “We think it will cut further in 2025, and growth will cool a little, but with inflation still above target the Fed won’t have room to cut much past 4%, leaving rates well above pre-pandemic levels,” BII said in its 2025 outlook. Markets see about a 75% chance of a 25 basis point cut this month, with 80 bps of cuts expected by the end of next year. In currencies, the dollar index, which measures the U.S. currency against six rivals, was little changed at 106.3. Oil futures slipped as traders awaited an imminent OPEC+ decision on supply. A larger-than-expected draw in U.S. crude stockpiles last week lent some support to prices. U.S. crude fell 1.62% to $68.81 a barrel and Brent declined to $72.53 per barrel, down 1.48% on the day. [O/R] In cryptocurrencies, bitcoin gained 3% to $98,892 and Ethereum rose 7.4% to $3,881 as Trump said he would nominate Paul Atkins to run the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Atkins is seen as a crypto industry-friendly pick. In my pre-pandemic life, I was on a plane at least six times a year. As a Canadian living abroad, I spent my days and dollars finding cheap flights, avoiding checked luggage and (literally) . Therefore, even if only self-proclaimed, I consider myself something of a carry-on expert. While I typically travel with two carry-on bags (a mini suitcase and a backpack), my tips involve what to bring in your carry-on backpack. First and foremost: . While a weekender bag and oversized tote are certainly cute, I find anything that requires hands or limits your mobility to be entirely impractical when you're speeding through an airport. Quick shop: Carry-on bag essentials Metro Backpack 5-in-1 Universal Travel Plug Adapter Emergen-C Super Orange (30 Count) Beats Studio Pro Headphones I have two backpacks I recommend, depending on your budget. On the less expensive side, I recommend . I travelled with a similar bag for nearly a decade and I still take it out from time to time or doing a more down-in-the-dirt, . My specific backpack has (sadly) been discontinued; however, the New Crew shares many of the same qualities. Shop this logo-printed 22-litre backpack in three colours. What I love about my (and this) Lululemon backpack: Water-repellant fabric: Trust me, any travel bag that is not water-repellant or waterproof is a waste of your money. Padded pocket (for obvious reasons). Exterior water bottle pocket. Interior pockets for your wallet, keys and more. Trolley-compatible sleeve — destined for an airport! If your budget is a bit more flexible and you're willing to invest in a backpack that can go from the airport to the office (and everywhere in between), I'm a fan of Monos' . Shop this editor-approved travel staple in 10 colours and nylon and vegan leather options. : It has a separate laptop compartment, several versatile interior pockets and a built-in trolley sleeve. It's super durable — after more than 18 months of use, it still looks brand new. The front kit can be easily detached and reattached to change the look of your bag. It's stylish — expect compliments when you wear it. Now, equally as important: What to pack in your carry-on bag. From a reusable water bottle to noise-cancelling headphones, here are 34 travel essentials I never leave home without. If you take only one tip from this article, let this be it: in your carry-on bag. I repeat: Always pack a reusable water bottle in your carry-on bag. Between global warming and inflation, buying a disposable water bottle at the airport is not helping anyone, anywhere. Pack an (empty) water bottle, fill it up inside, and just like magic, you've saved $8 at the airport convenience store. Brita's BPA-free Premium Filtering Bottle holds 26 oz of water and features the brand's famous filter. The filter reduces chlorine, improving the taste and odour of your water. With nearly 27,000 reviews on Amazon, shoppers call it a "surprisingly sturdy" water bottle. has triple-layer insulation and offers two ways to drink — you can either sip through the built-in straw or tilt it back to swig through the wide-mouth opening. Next to a reusable water bottle, a pair of noise-cancelling headphones is a travel essential, in my opinion. Why? Wireless headphones (i.e. ) can't connect to in-flight entertainment, so unless you're keen to stream a show on your phone via the airline's app, you have to either forgo entertainment or purchase a pair of single-use headphones for the flight. Secondly, the noise-cancelling function helps to drown out noisy neighbours and comes in handy if you're looking to snooze. These over-ear headphones come with a staggering 38,000 reviews from Amazon shoppers and an average rating of 4.3 stars. According to one user, the sound is "great," and the "bass is excellent." The headphones can wirelessly connect to your phone when out walking or at the beach, but also include a cable that can connect to in-flight entertainment. These editor-approved over-ear headphones feature fully adaptive active noise cancelling (pure ANC) technology, which actively blocks unwanted external noises such as airplane sounds, noisy office neighbours and outside traffic. A universal Bluetooth what? This nifty little device allows you to connect your wireless headphones to an airplane's entertainment system so you can go without the aforementioned corded headphones. Cool, right? This two-in-one Bluetooth transmitter and receiver offers users a playtime of up to 22 hours. The device has earned a 4-star rating from 4,000 reviews. It "works like a charm," according to one shopper. Connect your wireless headphones to any device or share the experience with a friend with the Airfly Pro. This pocket-sized device allows you to connect two pairs of AirPods or wireless headphones to any 3.5mm audio jack so you can watch a movie with a friend on a plane or anywhere you might need to share a device. If the airline blunders of the past several years have taught us anything, it's to bring a change of clothes in your carry-on, just in case. On my personal packing list: socks, underwear, a cute day-to-night maxi dress and a sweater. This super comfortable and lightweight dress is wrinkle-resistant, making it perfect for stowing away in carry-on bags or backpacks. Dubbed Anthropologie's "bestselling, best-reviewed" dress ever, this always-in-style maxi dress is flattering on everyone and comes in several colourways and prints. This cozy button-up cardigan offers "unmatched" softness, according to Uniqlo reviewers. The "softness of this cardigan is absolutely unmatched with anything I have ever felt," comments one shopper. "Think luxe cashmere but fluffy and thicker." Yes, it's expensive, but if you have a bit of cash on hand, Reformation's cashmere cardigan is my no.1 draft pick of the season. It's beyond luxe and ultra cozy, and there's something about wearing cashmere on a plane that makes you feel like Kris Jenner's long-lost child. While my body seems physically incapable of sleeping on a plane, I still reach for an eye mask on every overnight flight, hoping for a miracle. A teacher once told me that your brain waves during deep meditation are similar to the early stages of sleep. So if anything, I venture for a lights-out meditative session and pray that it's enough to keep me going until I eventually find a bed. This blindfold-style sleeping mask is made from skin-friendly organic cotton and is designed to block out 100 per cent of outdoor light, including around the nose area. The mask has earned more than 8,900 reviews from Amazon shoppers and an average rating of 4.4 stars. This contour sleep mask is made from high-grade mulberry silk that's designed with eyelash extensions in mind. The United States is a paradox: Media and public opinion polls portray us as a nation divided along partisan lines, but deeper research reveals that Americans share common ground on many core values and political issues. As a political philosopher , I worry about the growing chasm between our shared concerns and the often ugly polarization that divides the electorate. As we gather with family and friends who may have voted for different candidates this Thanksgiving, let’s keep in mind the many things we do agree on. A fuller awareness of our shared principles – particularly on what are so often presented as divisive policy issues – can help us listen to and respect one another over the dinner table conversation, even if it turns to politics. Cultivating political civility and unity in our private lives is a modest yet indispensable act that we all can undertake to defend and nurture the norms and culture of democracy – even if some of our political representatives fail to set the same example in public life. For starters, there is huge agreement among Americans on issues such as taxes, immigration and the economy, a 2023 survey by the American Communities Project found . There is also strong support for fundamental democratic principles , including equal protection under the law, voting rights and our First Amendment freedoms of religion, assembly, speech and the press. Judy Ho Oct. 29, 2024 In survey after survey, a majority of Americans say abortion should be legal in most or all cases. There is also broad support for high-quality health care that is accessible to all . A majority of U.S. citizens acknowledge the reality of human-caused climate change and endorse the development of renewable energy , though they may differ on how to achieve those goals. Too often positions are treated as adversarial when in fact they can be compatible – and voters with nuanced views may actually hold both positions. For example, there is broad support for stronger gun control regulations , as well as support for the right to bear arms. For all the bitterness of the 2024 presidential election, the top concerns were widely shared across party lines. Both Republicans and Democrats ranked the economy as a top political priority. A shared pessimism over the economy clearly helped Donald Trump win the election. On immigration, another key factor in the election, Americans have a positive view of legal immigration , though that sentiment has declined in recent years . Today, most Americans want to see immigration reduced . Part of the tension in the nation’s thinking about immigration stems from a political culture that is more responsive to sensationalism and disinformation than to sober consideration and discussion of the pros and cons of immigration. Much of the discourse was marred by fictional and bigoted tales of immigrants eating pets and false portrayals of most immigrants as criminals . Even shared political perceptions aren’t always based on good evidence or reasons. Despite sharing common ground, Americans perceive the nation as deeply polarized , and constant exposure to disinformation makes it nearly impossible to sort fact from fiction. Indeed, the perception of division can itself fuel distrust where commonality might otherwise be found. This perception of polarization can be exploited by partisans with something to gain. When people are told that experts are divided on an issue, such as climate change, it leads to distrust and polarization . Conversely, emphasizing scientific consensus tends to unify public concern and action. The perception that Americans are more divided than we are poses an enormous threat to democracy. People begin to see even neighbors and family members who vote differently as enemies rather than fellow citizens. Stress about holiday interactions with relatives who voted differently is leading some people to cancel family gatherings rather than spend time together. If people are too busy attacking each other, they will miss opportunities to unite, and they will fail to recognize the real threats to their shared values. Johnny C. Taylor Jr. July 19, 2024 Recognizing the public’s shared values is an important first step in healing political divides. Philosopher Robert B. Talisse has argued that one way to get started might be refocusing attention on nonpolitical community projects that bring together people who don’t normally think of each other as allies. That includes civic or sports clubs and local community events. These are collaborative in a way that supports community identity rather than partisan identity. It is an exercise in rebuilding civic trust and recognizing each other as fellow citizens, and perhaps even friends, without the tension of partisan politics. Once this trust in each other’s civic identity is healed, it can open a door for meaningful political discussion and understanding of each other’s concerns. Including at holiday gatherings. Login or signup to continue reading Far-right and left-wing lawmakers joined forces on Wednesday to back a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Michel Barnier, with a majority 331 votes in support of the motion. Barnier has to tender his resignation and that of his government to President Emmanuel Macron, making his minority government's three-month tenure the shortest lived in France's Fifth Republic beginning in 1958. He is expected to do so on Thursday morning, French media reported. The hard left and far right punished Barnier for using special constitutional powers to adopt part of an unpopular budget without a final vote in parliament, where it lacked majority support. The draft budget had sought 60 billion euros ($A97.98 billion) in savings in a drive to shrink a gaping deficit. "This (deficit) reality will not disappear by the magic of a motion of censure," Barnier told lawmakers ahead of the vote, adding the budget deficit would come back to haunt whichever government comes next. No French government had lost a confidence vote since Georges Pompidou's in 1962. Macron ushered in the crisis by calling a snap election in June that delivered a polarised parliament. With its president diminished, France risks ending the year without a stable government or a 2025 budget, although the constitution allows special measures that would avert a US-style government shutdown. France's political turmoil will further weaken a European Union already reeling from the implosion of Germany's coalition government, and weeks before US President-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House. The country's outgoing defence minister Sebastien Lecornu warned the turmoil could impact French support for Ukraine. The hard left France Unbowed (LFI) party demanded Macron's resignation. Barnier's political demise was cheered by far-right chief Marine Le Pen, who has sought for years to portray her National Rally party as a government in waiting. "I'm not pushing for Macron's resignation," she said. "The pressure on the president will get greater and greater. Only he will make that decision." France faces a period of deep political uncertainty that is already unnerving investors in French sovereign bonds and stocks. Earlier this week, France's borrowing costs briefly exceeded those of Greece, generally considered far more risky. Macron must now make a choice. The Elysee Palace said the president would address the nation on Thursday evening. Three sources told Reuters that Macron aimed to install a new prime minister swiftly, with one saying he wanted to name a premier before a ceremony to reopen the Notre-Dame Cathedral on Saturday, which Trump is due to attend. Any new prime minister would face the same challenges as Barnier in getting bills, including the 2025 budget, adopted by a divided parliament. There can be no new parliamentary election before July. Macron could alternatively ask Barnier and his ministers to stay on in a caretaker capacity while he takes time to identify a prime minister able to attract sufficient cross-party support to pass legislation. A caretaker government could either propose emergency legislation to roll the tax-and-spend provisions in the 2024 budget into next year, or invoke special powers to pass the draft 2025 budget by decree - though jurists say this is a legal grey area and the political cost would be huge. Macron's opponents also could vote down one prime minister after the next. Australian Associated Press DAILY Today's top stories curated by our news team. Also includes evening update.
